BEIJING, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- China announced the cancellation of 100 percent tariffs it had imposed on certain Canadian imports since March 2025, in a move aimed at promoting the sound, stable and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
In a statement on Friday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said the decision came in response to recent adjustments made by Canada to its tariff measures against Chinese steel and aluminum products.
The ministry noted that the cancellation will take effect from March 1 through December 31.
It pointed out that China had imposed 100 percent anti-discrimination tariffs on imports of canola oil and peas from Canada on March 8 as a countermeasure to additional duties introduced by Ottawa, including a 100 percent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25 percent tariff on Chinese-made steel and aluminum products.
Trade tensions between China and Canada saw a breakthrough following a visit by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Beijing in mid-January, during which both sides reached important understandings on resolving economic issues in the fields of electric vehicles, steel, aluminum, and certain marine and agricultural products.
