EU FMs meet to discuss Iran, Libya

BRUSSELS, Dec 10 (KUNA) -- European Union Foreign Ministers Monday began their formal monthly meeting here to discuss a wide range of issues including Iran, Libya and Ukraine.
"First of all we will mark a very important anniversary that for us is also a political statement. The 70th anniversary of the universal Declaration of Human Rights is marked today," EU High Representative Federica Mogherini told reporters ahead of the meeting.
"Today's agenda covers the entire world basically, from Venezuela to Iran, from the Western Balkans to our relations with the African Union," she said, noting that the ministers will issue conclusions on Libya.
They will host for a working lunch the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Pavlo Klimkin.
On his part, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the nuclear deal with Iran is important for the security of Europe.
"We don't want Iran to use enriched uranium for military purposes and we believe we can achieve that only with the upholding of the nuclear deal. This is why we want to facilitate steps towards allowing payments and economic activity in Iran," he told reporters.
"We will also discuss about our points of criticism towards Iran, in terms of its role in Syria, its ballistic missiles programme, the human rights issues and the activity of Iranian secret service in Europe. We need to apply pressure on Iran and this will be an important issue today," he pointed out. (end) nk.hs
