NEW YORK, April 27 (KUNA) -- United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Friday hailed today's summit between the leaders of North and South Korea, involved in a seven decades-long conflict, as "historic," applauding the encounter as having "moved" people around the world.
"The Secretary-General salutes the courage and leadership that resulted in the important commitments and agreed actions outlined in the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula," read a statement.
Guterres urged North Korea's Kim Jong-un and South Korea's Moon Jae-in to "swiftly implement" the declaration, saying it would boost trust-building and reconciliation aimed at sustainable peace and denuclearization on the Peninsula.
The UN chief also expressed hope these gains are "consolidated and advanced" at an upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and South Korean leader Kim, pledging the global organisation's commitment to the planned talks. (end) asf.sd
