Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hussein Taha
JEDDAH, Nov 30 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hussein Taha reminded the international community of their responsibility for helping the Palestinian people regain their rights to justice, freedom and self-determination.
In a speech read on his behalf by Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Jerusalem Affairs Samir Bakr at a function in Jeddah, Taha stressed the legitimacy of the Palestinian people's struggle for statehood, a statement from the OIC Secretariat said on Sunday.
The function, held on the permanent delegate-level, was organized by the OIC Secretariat on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
The occasion is marked this year at a time when the unpreceded two-year genocide against the Palestinian people put the international community to a real test regarding their political will and commitment to the international laws, according to the statement.
The OIC underscored the necessity of supporting the truce deal in Gaza Strip, ensuring durable cessation of hostilities and full pullout of the Israeli occupation forces from the territory, and reopening all border crossings to humanitarian aid.
The organization called for a doner conference in Cairo to help finance Gaza reconstruction plan.
It also urged protecting the role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and other aid agencies which provide vital assistance to the Palestinian people.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed annually on November 29 under the UN General Assembly Resolution 32/40 (1977) in remembrance of that day in 1947 when the Assembly adopted a resolution on the partition of Palestine. (end)
