KUWAIT, March 4 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Minister of Commerce and Industry Khaled Al-Roudhan said Sunday the government was in the process of achieving food security through "an effective executive mechanism and thoroughly-studied plans." The State of Kuwait "pays a special attention to food security and considers it a major strategy in its vision," Al-Roudhan, also Minister of State for Youth, said in a speech at the launch of an initiative by Qbetter company to achieve sustainable food security.
He said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has been working hard to the development of food security in line with latest technologies.
He said the initiative of Qbetter actively contributed to strengthening of food security. Al-Roudhan said Kuwait was ranked 26th globally in terms of food security in 2017.
The State, said Al-Roudhan, has been distributing rations to some 1.599 million people every month. He added that rations' subsidies reached 177.76 million Kuwaiti Dinars (KD) (USD 592 million) in 2017.
The ministry, he went on, has been investing in Kuwaiti youth to enable them build their capabilities to establish their own businesses.
Anas Al-Otaibi, Qbetter CEO, said the company aimed at activating small and medium-size projects, as well as supporting creative ideas.
He said 40-50 percent of GDP of advanced economies depends on small and medium-size projects.
Qbetter aims ato transforming Kuwait into a global information hub, he said.
Al-Otaibi said Qbetter was a business incubator, through which the company provided an environment for start-ups. (end) mam.bs
