GENEVA, June 27 (KUNA) -- UN mediator for Cyprus Espec Eide on Tuesday said the third round of negotiations between the Cypriot parties which began Tuesday "is a unique opportunity" in the quest of settling the protracted strife.
Speaking to reporters before start of the new discussions, Eide described the new round of talks as "the last chance" for the parties to settle their dispute.
Representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots sat again at the negotiating table with no consensus documents on means of re-unifying the island, divided since 40 years ago.
However, the UN envoy indicated that the face-to-face discussions are necessary for confidence building, adding that they would focus on lands' confiscations, prospected ruling after re-unification and jurisdictions' distribution, compatible with the population sectarian formation, grouping Muslims and Orthodox Christians.
The talks involved Turkish Cypriot President Mustaf Akinci and his Greek Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades.
The opening session is attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, his Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. (end) ta.rk
