BRUSSELS, June 12 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) expressed on Thursday its deepest condolences and solidarity with India following the tragic plane crash that occurred earlier this morning in the city of Ahmedabad.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed her "deep sorrow at the heartbreaking news" and said in a post on X "Heartbreaking news from India after the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims."
"We share Indiaآ’s deep sorrow, and I assure Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Europe stands with you in these painful moments," she added.
For her part, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas expressed her "profound regret for this tragic incident" in a post on X, adding, "My thoughts are with the families of the passengers and crew, and with all those affected by this tragedy."
Meanwhile, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola expressed her solidarity with the people of India in a post on X, saying: "Heartbroken to learn the news of the tragic accident at Ahmedabad Airport this morning. My thoughts are with all the families of the victims and all those injured or affected by this painful incident. The European Union stands with India during this difficult time."
Earlier today, an Air India passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport en route to London Gatwick Airport, resulting in several casualties among both passengers and crew members. (end)
