Arab League urges int'l, regional efforts to end conflict in Sudan

CAIRO, April 30 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Aboul Gheit called, Wednesday, for stronger international and regional efforts to end the armed conflict in Sudan and deliver humanitarian aid to affected areas.
The remarks came during a meeting between Aboul Gheit and UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, where the two officials discussed the evolving situation in Sudan and ongoing efforts to achieve peace.
Aboul Gheit reiterated the Arab League's firm support for the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations for peace, security, and sustainable development.
He emphasized the League's core principles regarding the crisis, including the preservation of Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, the protection of national institution, and the rejection of foreign interference.
He also stressed the importance of launching an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process that respects the country's sovereignty and ensures broad societal participation.
Lamamra briefed Aboul Gheit on the UN's upcoming plan and outlined the diplomatic challenges facing international efforts, and also provided an update on the situation particularly following the Sudanese Armed Forces' recent recapture of the capital, Khartoum.
The UN envoy underlined the importance of coordinated efforts between the UN and the Arab League to ensure the effectiveness of international initiatives on Sudan. (end) mfm.dss
