NEW YORK, Jan 25 (KUNA) -- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to exercise caution and prepare for severe winter conditions as a powerful snowstorm, described as the city's worst in five years, approaches with a sharp drop in temperatures.
CBS News reported that Mamdani made the remarks during a press conference late Saturday in Manhattan, as a state of emergency was declared in New York City and forecasters predicted snowfall of between eight and 12 inches starting Sunday morning.
Quoting Mamdani, CBS said the storm would bring a prolonged period of freezing temperatures lasting through the coming week, warning it would be colder than any extended cold spell New York has experienced in nearly eight years, while urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
City authorities affirmed their readiness to protect lives and respond to the severe weather, with New York Governor Kathy Hochul deploying National Guard forces to assist, as at least 16 US states declared emergencies and more than 5,100 flights were canceled nationwide due to the storm.
