WASHINGTON, Dec 6 (KUNA) - The United States on Friday said it is closely monitoring the rapid developments in Syria and called for the protection of the civilians and launching of a credible political process to end the 14-year civil war in Syria.
"The United States, together with -- its partners and allies, urge de-escalation, protection of civilians and minority groups, and a serious and credible political process that can end this civil war once and for all, with a political settlement consistent with UNSCR 2254," White House Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said in a press briefing.
Jean-Pierre affirmed that the US troops will remain in Syria to ensure that the Islamic State group ISIS can never again resurge there.
She reiterated that "the Assad regime's ongoing refusal to engage in the political process outlined in UNSCR 2054, and its reliance on Russia and Iran created the conditions now unfolding, including the collapse of Assad regime lines in northwest Syria". (end)
