MOSCOW, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for achieving just peace in Gaza and Lebanon, Ukraine and Sudan in tune with the UN charter and the international law and UN General Assembly's resolutions.
Guterres, addressing the Brics summit held in the Russian city of Kazan, said the world needs just peace. As to Lebanon, he called for respecting the state sovereignty, protecting the civilians, abstaining from attacking civil infrastructures and respecting the international law.
Israel's targeting of the UN peacekeeping troops in Lebanon is tantamount to a war crime, he said, condemning the continuous and ferocious Israeli offensives on residential regions in Lebanon.
He called for observing an immediate cease-fire, coupled with measures to implement the UNSG resolution 1559 (issued in 2004) and 1071 resolution, released by the Security Council to end hostilities between Israel and Lebanon in 2006.
Brics, when it was founded in 2006 had grouped Russia, Brazil, India and China. Later on, South Africa, Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Ethiopia joined it.
The current summit, the 16th edition, addresses the issue of accepting more members, in addition to various topics related to economic and political cooperation. (end)
