EU condemns attack on UN peacekeepers in DR Congo

BRUSSELS, July 28 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Thursday strongly condemned the attack on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) during violent demonstrations on Tuesday in Butembo, North Kivu province.
The attack killed two Indian policemen and a Moroccan soldier and wounded an Egyptian policeman. Many protesters lost their lives or were injured, noted EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Nabila Massrali in a statement.
The EU expressed its deepest condolences to the families of all the victims and to MONUSCO, as well as to the Governments of the countries concerned.
The 27-member bloc reaffirmed its support for MONUSCO and the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their commitment to investigate these incidents and prosecute those responsible. (end) nk.mt
