UNSC blocks US draft to extend Iran arms embargo

KUWAIT, Aug 14 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council on Friday voted against a US draft resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran beyond October 2020.
The US mission to the Council presented the four-paragraph draft to the Council members on August 11 but failed to gain the required votes.
The draft, a replay of measures stipulated in the resolution of last June 22, includes inspections of ships, seizures of arms, travel bans, freeze of assets and the formation of a sanctions committee to oversee the implementation of the resolution and another one to inspect Iran's activities in the region.
Though the draft failed to extend the restrictions on Iranian weapon and nuclear programs under the UNSC Resolution 2231, it will unlikely put an end to the US efforts in this regard.
The Resolution 2231, unanimously adopted on July 20, 2015, endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) concluded on 14 July 2015 by China, France, Germany, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States, the High Representative of the European Union (the E3/EU+3) and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Under this resolution, the UN inspections of the Iranian nuclear sites aimed to verify Iran's commitment to the JCPOA, are scheduled to expire in 2025 as a prelude to ending the UN sanctions. (end) asf.gb
