COVID-19 keeps claiming more lives worldwide

KUWAIT, March 31 (KUNA) -- The world has now reported over 790,000 infections and at least 38,000 fatalities due to the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19.
The pandemic, which originated in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, has already hit more than 177 countries and territories, which announce deaths and infections on a daily basis.
Starting with Belgium, 98 more coronavirus patients died in Belgium during the last 24 hours, the Belgian Health Ministry announced Tuesday. In addition, another 94 deaths were reported retroactively, raising the death toll to 705. 93 percent of them are over 65 years old, it said in a press statement.
Some 867 new infections were added across Belgium. The total number of infections is now at 12,775. There are now 4,920 people in the hospital who are infected with the coronavirus. That is 485 more than yesterday, it added.
In Lebanon, the coronavirus case count reached 463 on Tuesday as 17 new cases were confirmed, with 12 deaths in total so far, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.
"Until 31/3/2020, the number of coronavirus cases confirmed by the laboratories of Rafik Hariri University Hospital (RHUH), the accredited university hospitals and private labs, has reached 463, with an increase of 17 cases compared to yesterday," the ministry said in a daily report.
In Palestine, two additional infections were confirmed; one from the West Bank and the other from the Gaza Strip, raising the total number of infections to 117.
Iraq's Kurdistan Region said only one person had tested positive for the virus, taking the count up to 161 so far, with two recoveries.
In Sudan, the Ministry of Health reported one more virus case of a foreigner in his 60s, who arrived in Khartoum from the UAE on March 14. Thus, the number of confirmed infections hit seven, with two fatalities, all coming from abroad.
Czech announced that the death toll rose to 24 as seven fatalities were confirmed on Tuesday. Infections topped 3,002, and 25 recoveries were reported.
Romania's mortality count jumped to 68 nd infections to 21,09 in total, while Russia reported a further 500 cases to raise total cases to 2,337, with a total 17 deaths. (end) kt.mt
