AMMAN, Feb 8 (KUNA) -- Jordanian Parliament Speaker Atef Tarawneh said Saturday Palestinians would only accept a viable solution that envisages a Palestinian statehood on the June 4 border with its capital in Jerusalem.
Tarawneh made the remark during an extraordinary meeting of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU) held in Amman, with 20 Arab parliament speakers and representatives attending.
He warned that the U.S. Middle East peace plan "confiscates the Palestinian people's rights and undermines the very foundations on which relevant international legitimacy resolutions were based".
Palestinian Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Zanoun addressed the gathering by calling on Arab countries to throw more weight behind the Palestinian people, including material, political and parliamentary backing, and to oppose the recently unveiled U.S. move.
He underscored that it is also essential to adopt resolutions that could ensure the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and to put relevant international legitimacy resolutions in place.
Al-Zanoun also urged Arab parliaments and government to work together as a united group to openly and emphatically turn down the U.S. plan for the Middle East peace process.
The Jordanian parliament speaker on Sunday called for an extraordinary APU meeting to look into the U.S. peace move.
US President Donald Trump had unveiled a new Middle East peace plan, saying "it's been a long and very arduous process to arrive at this moment." In a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump said "my vision presents a win-win situation for both sides," and that "today Israel is taking a giant step toward peace." He added that "this plan will double Palestinian territory and set the capital of the Palestinian state in eastern Jerusalem where the United States will happily open an embassy." "Under this vision, Jerusalem will remain Israel's undivided, very important, undivided capital," he added.
The US peace plan has sparked wide-scale Arab wrath, with Palestinians lashing out at it for only serving Israeli interests. (end) ab.mt
