European Parliament body condemns Haftar's threats to attack Tripoli

BRUSSELS, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries Friday urged the international community to condemn Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar for his threats to Tripoli.
"The latest threats from self-proclaimed Field-Marshal Haftar about a broad and total assault towards the heart of the capital are a matter of serious concern," said Andrea Cozzolino, Chair of the Delegation in a statement.
"Such a military offensive would only lead to more suffering for the Libyan civilian population, who have already paid a high price, with thousands of deaths and more than 128,000 people fleeing their homes since April 2019," he warned.
"I call on the European Union and the international community as a whole to condemn such threats and take all necessary measures to prevent a bloodbath," he said.
The Italian Member of the European Parliament reiterated the EP's full support to the UN efforts in Libya.
"It represents a crucial opportunity for the international and regional actors to commit to and support a political solution to the crisis in Libya, through a Libyan-owned political process. The EU and all its Member States should speak with one voice with regard to Libya and grant their full support to the UN Special Representative for Libya," he added. (end) nk.mt
