Railway services between Iran, Turkey resume

ANKARA, Aug 11 (KUNA) -- Turkey and Iran have resumed railway trips following four years of suspension of this land transport between the two countries.
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Cahit Turan declared on Sunday that railway trips would resume from Ankara to Tehran next Wednesday.
His remarks came following a recent declaration by Iran that a train headed from Tehran to Ankara, following an agreement between the countries to resume the railway services.
Official Turkish news agency, Anadolu, quoted the minister as saying that the decision to resume the services came following the eighth meeting of the joint transport commission.
The train, with a capacity of 188 passengers, will travel once a week in both directions between Ankara and Tehran.
The minister affirmed necessity of increasing transports with Iran for boosting commercial cooperation between the two countries.
These trips had been suspended after an explosion hit a train and damaged a wagon. The outlawed Kurdish separatist group, the PKK, had claimed responsibility for the blast. (end) rs.rk
