Director-General of the Arab League's Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Dr Saud Al-Harbi
CAIRO, July 25 (KUNA) -- Director-General of the Arab League's Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Dr Saud Al-Harbi hoped Wednesday Kuwait will host the first Arab Cultural Summit due to its pioneering role in disseminating culture in the region.
The Arab Cultural Summit is deemed a large-scale cultural event, while Kuwait has long been interested in culture, Al-Harbi told reporters at the Cairo-based Arab League.
He added: "The Kuwaiti cultural movement is leading and deserves special praise, as it is backed by the government, and has nothing to do whatsoever with politics."
Commending Kuwait's role and contributions to spreading culture in the Arab region, Al-Harbi said the State of Kuwait can ensure a successful cultural gathering.
The cultural movement in Kuwait is supported by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who has been interested in culture since he was the director of the Guidance and News Department in the middle of last century, he said.
Kuwait boasts effective cultural institutions, mainly the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) and Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center, the ALECSO chief noted.
Al-Harbi pointed out major Kuwaiti magazines like Al-Arabi and Alam Alfikir (World of Thought), the National Theatre series and kids' books.
The Arab crisis is undoubtedly a cultural one, he believed, adding that culture is the basis for community-building. (end)
