EP condemns extrajudicial killings in the Philippines

BRUSSELS, April 19 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament (EP) called Thursday on the government of the Philippines to immediately put an end to the extrajudicial killings in the pretext of a "war on drug." The EP adopted a resolution condemning the authorities in the Philippines for trying to justify these murders with falsified evidence.
The resolution also urges President Rodrigo Duterte to stop harassing, intimidating or banning his critics from entry into the country and urges the Philippines government to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC ).
It calls for human rights defenders to be removed from government's list of terrorists, which includes Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples.
The resolution also condemns the intimidation and the abuse of human rights defenders, activists and journalist, and urges the government to stop the reintroduction of death penalty, which is against Philippines' international obligations. (end) nk.mt
