EU, Arab League FMs meet in bid to revive Mideast peace process - Mogherini

BRUSSELS, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- EU foreign ministers will meet with six of their Arab counterparts in Brussels later today in an effort to try to re-launch the Middle East peace process, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said Monday.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, she said the Arab side is composed of the Delegation of the League of Arab States on Jerusalem, chaired by Jordan and includes the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, as well as the League's Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
"We will discus the common approach we (EU) and the Arab League have to try and revive the Middle East peace process with the perspective of two states. It is important to preserve the special status of Jerusalem as the holy city of all the three monotheistic religions," she said.
The EU foreign ministers will also discuss developments in Syria where the situation on the ground is deteriorating, noted Mogherini.
She called for the immediate implementation of the UNSC resolution on a ceasefire in Syria and said that she will continue contacts with regional and international partners so that the situation on ground improves immediately.
Mogherini said she will meet the UN undersecretary general for humanitarian aid Mark Lowcock in Brussels tomorrow to discuss how to act together to improve the situation on the ground.
"I am extremely concerned about the increase of military operations all over Syria from different actors, first and foremost by the regime and its supporters," she said, adding that Iran, Russia and Turkey as guarantors have a special responsibility to ensure that a process of de-escalation takes place.
