TEHRAN, Jan 27 (KUNA) -- Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Jan Kubis said he shared identical views on the situations in Iraq with Iranian Supreme Leader's top aide for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati.
During their meeting in Tehran on Saturday, both sides agreed that Iraq is on the right track, according to Iran's Fars News Agency.
Kubis, also head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), is now on a visit to Iran.
The Iraqi people, backed by friendly countries, were able to defeat the so-called Islamic State (IS), he said, noting that Iraq will be able to contributed to security and stability in the region in the coming stage.
He reaffirmed the UN commitment to support Iraq in the political, economic and security areas, saying that the UNAMI will continue helping Iraq to maintain its unity and territorial integrity, achieve economic development, attract foreign investment and combat corruption.
Velayati, on his part, affirmed Iran's support to neighborly Iraq and welcomed the victories recently made by the Iraqi forces against the IS.
He lauded his talks with Kubis as very positive and constructive
The Iranian senior official expressed hope that the coming parliamentary elections in Iraq would deepen and strengthen democracy in the country. (end)
