EU condemns terrorist attacks in Africa

BRUSSELS, July 28 (KUNA) -- The EU has condemned the recent terrorist attacks in several African countries including Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Somalia and called for those responsible to be brought before justice.
In the last two months, about 800 people are reported to have been killed and many more wounded in multiple terror attacks in the countries around Lake Chad, said Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement late Monday night.
"Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are sparing no effort in fighting terrorism in the region. Strong coordination both on the ground and at regional level, and for continued socio-economic development of the affected areas is needed," said the spokesperson.
She added that the EU reiterates its support to those regional organizations, national authorities, civil society organizations and citizens that are involved.
The EU also condemned Sunday's attack on the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, in which dozens of innocent people died.
"Such acts of terrorism will not undermine the willingness to progress on the political process towards a stable and secure country. Those behind such crimes must be swiftly brought to justice," she said. (end) nk.ibi
