Afghanistan to get 15 million dollars OIC donation
DOHA, Nov 3 (KUNA) -- Afghanistan is expected to receive a sum of 15
million dollars donated by a number of member countries of the Organization of
Islamic Conference (OIC), it was officially announced here on Sunday.
The announcement came at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the Donor
states in Doha which was designed to help the Afghani people overcome its
difficulties and start a fresh drive of reconstruction.
Saif Moqaddam Al-Buainein, OIC General coordinator of the organisation of
islamic conference (oic) declared the setting up of the said fund on part of
the donor states, numbering 23 islamic states.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Al Buainein said donations to
the fund reached US. dlrs. 15 mn, ten of which were donated by the state of
qatar, Chairman of the current 9th Islamic Summit.
Three millions from the United Arab Emirates, one million from Sultanate of
Oman, a half million from Iran and 300,000 US dollars from the Sultanate of
Brunei, he added.
Al Buainein hailed the meeting which he described as positive and said he
found strong enthusiasm on part of the Islamic states to consolidate the fund
and offer assistance to the Afghani people to lead an honourable life and work
for the reconstruction of its country, Afghanistan.
The remaining donor states have promised to offer their assitance later on
while Tunisia and Sudan have pledged their commitment to extend technical
assitance to Afghanistan within the framework of the said fund, he said.
Al buainein, meantime, expressed his conviction that all the Islamic
states, whatever their respective circumstances, would contribute in the near
future and in a way or another, to such a fund and whether such assistance
would be in a material or a technical form.
The participants, Al buainein said, have unanimously approved Ismail
Omar El-Dafa as Qatar's candidate to occupy the post of the executive of the
fund. the candidate is, the head of the budget section at the finance ministry.
He said that the board of trustees of the fund was selected from six
countries, namely Qtar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Iran, Sudan and
Tunisia.(end)
