EU Chief decries "reckless and indiscriminate" Iranian attacks against sovereign territories

BRUSSELS, March 3 (KUNA) -- President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Monday criticized what she described as "reckless and indiscriminate attacks by Iran and its proxies against sovereign territories across the region," amid escalating regional tensions.
Speaking to reporters at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, von der Leyen called for urgent de-escalation to prevent the conflict between the United States and the Israeli occupation entity on one side and Iran on the other from spreading across the Middle East, stressing the importance of containing the crisis.
She underscored the need to "work hard to de-escalate and stop the conflict spreading," warning that "the stability of the region is of the utmost importance." She added that "the situation remains volatile," noting that she had held consultations over the weekend with nine Middle Eastern leaders and would chair an emergency meeting of the College of Commissioners later in the day to discuss the developments.
Although the developments were "deeply concerning," von der Leyen affirmed support for the Iranian people and "strongly support their right to determine their own future," calling for a "credible transition," a halt to Iran's nuclear and ballistic programmes and "an end to destabilising activities."
