RABAT, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- Media outlets in Burkina Faso reported on Thursday, that at least 11 police officers were killed in an attack carried out by armed men linked to Al-Qaeda organization in the eastern part of the country.
Hundreds of gunmen attacked a security detachment at dawn last Sunday in the Balga area, Gourma Province, resulting in the killing of seven police officers at the scene, and four others died later from their injuries.
A group linked to Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack on the same day without providing further details, the local media reported, noting that there were additional missing persons whose number has not been determined.
Burkina Faso has witnessed an escalation in armed attacks since 2015, carried out by groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and Daesh in several parts of the country, especially in the east and the Sahel region. (end)
