Kuwait celebrates 2nd anniversary of the Amirآ’s assumption of office
(Report) KUWAIT, Dec 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait celebrates tomorrow, Saturday, the 2nd anniversary of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabahآ’s assumption of office, as the Gulf nation witnesses multi-faceted development elevating its status regionally and internationally.
His Highness the Amir assumed the reins of power on December 20, 2023, to become the 17th ruler of Kuwait, following a distinguished career spanning six decades, during which he held security and military positions before having been nominated as Crown Prince, in addition to accompanying the State of Kuwaitآ’s rulers or representing them in many official visits and missions.
On that day two years ago, His Highness the Amir addressed the National Assembly after taking the constitutional oath at the governmentآ’s request, pursuant to Article 60 of the Constitution and in accordance with Article 72 of the National Assemblyآ’s bylaws.
"I pledge to Almighty Allah, and then pledge to the faithful Kuwaiti people and their representatives, to be the devoted citizen to his homeland and people, keen on safeguarding the interests of the country and its people, preserving national unity, striving for the elevation, progress and prosperity of the homeland, adhering to the religion and the firmly established national and constitutional principles, respecting the law and its enforcement, and combating all forms and manifestations of corruption." His Highness the Amir added that Kuwait would remain and survive "and our lifespans are reflected in our deeds", affirming the "continuation of Kuwaitآ’s approach and pioneering role with sisterly and friendly countries on various issues and matters of mutual interest," while maintaining its commitments at the Gulf, regional and international levels.
He stressed the importance of "responsible follow-up, objective accountability, and serious holding to account, within the framework of the Constitution and the law, for negligence, shortcomings, and tampering with the interests of the homeland and its citizens." Four days prior to that pledge of allegiance, the Council of Ministers convened on December 16 following the announcement of the passing of Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The Council proclaimed then Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Amir of the country, in accordance with the Constitution and Article Four of Law No. 4 of 1964 concerning the succession to the Amirate, in recognition of His Highness the Amirآ’s wisdom, sincerity and dedication to Kuwait and ensures its security and stability.
Over the past two years, Kuwait has witnessed a new phase marked by clarity of vision and firmness in reform, reflecting the wise leadershipآ’s commitment to diligent work for Kuwaitآ’s elevation and prosperity, the achievement of security and safety nationwide and the strengthening of national unity among its people.
On several occasions, His Highness the Amir has affirmed commitment to pursuing reform, enhancing stability, prioritizing the nationآ’s supreme interests, continuing the fight against corruption, and confronting anyone who seeks to undermine the countryآ’s security and stability or harm citizensآ’ interests.
He emphasized this in his speech delivered on March 23, 2025, on the occasion of the last 10 days of the holy month of Ramadhan, stating: "In order to achieve aspirations and accomplishments, we direct the government to expedite the implementation of all state development projects, particularly in health, education, and housing, and to complete the preparation of legislation and laws whose application will demonstrate the governmentآ’s keenness on interests of the nation and the interests of its citizens." In the same address, His Highness the Amir affirmed the continuation of Kuwaitآ’s role and pioneering approach in various humanitarian issues, its support for sisterly and friendly countries in confronting disasters and crises, and its keenness to align national legislation with international obligations related to human rights.
During that year, Kuwait achieved accomplishments across various fields in implementation of His Highness the Amirآ’s directives, aimed at strengthening Kuwaitآ’s leading regional and international role, enhancing its ability to confront diverse challenges, advancing development and accelerating progress, particularly in infrastructure, housing and development projects, and domestic legislation across all sectors.
Domestic issues occupied His Highness the Amirآ’s attention, as he consistently directed the need to understand citizensآ’ needs and meet their requirements, urging them to spare no effort in strengthening the reform process and consolidating unity among themselves.
His Highness the Amirآ’s instructions included improving government performance, enhancing efficiency and transparency, updating systems and laws, appointing leaders with experience and competence, promoting digital transformation to achieve transparency, supporting cultural and scientific fields, and ensuring close government follow-up on the implementation of its work and projects.
His Highness the Amir has repeatedly stressed the importance of caring for youth and supporting them and considered them Kuwaitآ’s wealth and the leaders of the future, empowering women and providing an environment conducive to developing their capabilities, and giving special attention to persons with disabilities by providing them with healthcare and housing, suitable educational and rehabilitation opportunities that meet their needs, and appropriate legislation to protect their rights.
His Highness the Amir has given special attention to the security and military institutions due to the vital role entrusted to them in protecting and strengthening the internal front, preventing crimes and terrorist attacks, safeguarding land, sea, and air borders, defending the homeland, and preserving its stability and sovereignty.
He has also been keen to honor citizens with outstanding achievements and pioneering initiatives, commend their contributions, and encourage them toward further excellence and success so that they may contribute to their countryآ’s progress and prosperity.
On December 21, 2024, His Highness the Amir attended the opening ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup football championship (Khaleeji Zain 26) at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.
On February 12, 2025, he attended the graduation ceremony of the 50th batch of cadets at Ali Al-Sabah Military College, and on February 19 he attended the graduation ceremony of the 47th batch of cadets at the Police College.
On February 24, His Highness the Amir attended the national operetta ceremony (The Fifth Fence).
On March 10, he visited the Ministry of Defense, followed the next day by visits to Kuwait Fire Force Headquarters and the Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Building at the Ministry of Interior. On March 16, His Highness visited the Supreme Judicial Council.
On April 30, His Highness the Amir attended a ceremony honoring graduates holding bachelorآ’s and postgraduate degrees with excellence for the academic years 2021-22 and 2022-23 at Kuwait University.
On May 7, His Highness the Amir attended a ceremony honoring outstanding graduates of Public Authority for Applied Education and Training for the academic year 2023-2024.
On November 11, he attended a ceremony honoring distinguished teachers and schools marking World Teachersآ’ Day.
At the Gulf level, His Highness the Amir has been keen to further strengthening Kuwaiti-Gulf relations and maintaining constant coordination with Gulf states on all matters concerning the region, safeguarding its security and stability, promoting the role of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and providing all forms of support that contribute to preserving the Councilآ’s gains and achievements.
