Kuwait supports global initiative to renew commitment to int'l humanitarian law

AMMAN, Dec 11 (KUNA) -- Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Sabah said on Thursday that Kuwait supports the global initiative to renew political commitment to international humanitarian law and will remain "an active partner in upholding the values of justice, peace, and human security." This came in a speech delivered by Ambassador Al-Sabah, who is also a member of Kuwait's National Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law, as she headed Kuwait's delegation to the High-Level Regional Conference on the Global Initiative to Renew Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law, hosted by Jordan at the Dead Sea with the participation of a number of specialists.
She stressed that Kuwait's accession to this global initiative represents a strategic step reflecting a serious political will to reinforce the rule of international humanitarian law, considering the initiative a unified platform for coordinating international efforts and bridging the gap between theoretical principles and practical application.
Al-Sabah emphasized that commitment to the objectives of the initiative has become a humanitarian necessity to ensure the stability of communities affected by conflicts.
She explained that implementing the initiative helps safeguard human dignity by protecting medical and relief facilities, securing humanitarian corridors, strengthening the culture of accountability, and preventing impunity, noting that "our commitment today is an investment in the future, one that restores confidence in the international community's ability to protect human beings wherever they may be." She announced that Kuwait's participation in the initiative is based on three pillars, enhancing mechanisms to protect civilians and humanitarian and medical workers in conflict zones, reinforcing the principle of accountability and preventing impunity through clear mechanisms for holding perpetrators of grave violations accountable.
Al-Sabah highlighted Kuwait's pioneering role in the issue of missing persons in armed conflicts, pointing to its ongoing cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which culminated in the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2474 (2019) on missing persons during Kuwait's non-permanent membership in the Council.
She noted that three decree-laws were issued in 2025 in line with the objectives of international humanitarian law, including the regulation of the use and protection of the Red Crescent and Red Cross emblems, the protection of missing persons, and international crimes, in addition to consideration of adopting a law on the protection of cultural property soon.
Ambassador Al-Sabah also appreciated the praise expressed by the Secretary-General of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Kuwait's well-known historic humanitarian role, marked by its generous and unwavering contributions to alleviating the suffering of peoples afflicted by conflicts, wars, and all countries affected by crises.
