CAIRO, Dec 18 (KUNA) -- The Arab League announced Sunday postponing the
meeting of the permanent representatives to Tuesday instead of Monday amid
reports about a change in the Syrian regime stance of the Arab crisis deal.
An Arab diplomatic source told KUNA that the decision was taken after
signals from the Iraqi mediators about possible Syrian acceptance to the Arab
observers' protocol.
Iraq is trying to mediate an end to nine months of unrest in Syria where
the UN estimates that more than 5,000 people have been killed in a regime
crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.
On Saturday, Iraqi National Security Adviser Falah al-Fayadh was in
Damascus where he said he had "positive" talks with Syria's president.
He then travelled to Cairo where he met Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi
and emerged from the talks sounding upbeat.
Saturday, the Arab League threatened to take Syria to the UN for
procrastinating over a deal to stop its crackdown on dissent, after Russia
proposed a surprise draft resolution to the conflict.(end)
