Kuwait wins key UNESCO post

By Ahmad Al-Mazyad PARIS, Oct 25 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Delegate to the UNESCO Ali Al-Tarrah has been unanimously elected vice president of the 36th session of the General Conference of the UNESCO for a two-year term.
Speaking to KUNA following the election, Al-Tarrah said: "The State of Kuwait is exerting great concerted efforts with its brotherly Gulf and Arab countries and world friends for putting forward recommendations for serving the UNESCO and reactivating its mechanisms." Kuwait is also seeking to host a research center for catering for the disabled, in collaboration with parties at the UNESCO, especially following a relevant successful initiative represented in the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad prize for consolidating the quality education of the mentally disabled, he said.
Kuwait is also determined to present integrated visions and mechanisms during the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference, mainly aiming to have Kuwaiti sites put on the UNESCO's World Heritage List, he pointed out.
Al-Tarrah noted that the presidency of the conference had offered condolence to Saudi Arabia over the death of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, remembering his great humanitarian role and relations with humanitarian societies and his relentless support for UNESCO projects.
Palestine's UN membership bid is a key issue on the agenda of the UNESCO meetings, he said.
Palestine is most likely to be accepted as permanent member of the UNESCO during the conference with a view to protecting and safeguarding heritage in Jerusalem, which is occasionally damaged in Israeli attack, Al-Tarrah added. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) opened the 36th session of its General Conference here earlier in the day.
The session was inaugurated by former president of the 35th session Davidson L. Hepburn (Commonwealth of The Bahamas). (pickup previous) amm.mt KUNA 252114 Oct 11NNNN
