WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- The US State department on Friday confirmed
that large swaths of the Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's hometown have been
overtaken by Libyan opposition forces.
"Our information is that good parts of Sirte have been liberated, but there
is still some work to do," State department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told
reporters at briefing. The National Transitional Council (NTC) "said when
Sirte is liberated, they will declare all of Libya liberated and they'll move
on to the next political steps."
Nuland called the Libya's NTC's Government latest report from the
battlefield "good news" and said the US will "trust and support their judgment
in terms of when they have won the battle."
The State department said it stands ready to eventually help the NTC with
police training, demobilization and other programs. (end)
