UNGA approves NTC credentials to represent Libya in 66th session

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- Acting upon recommendation from its Credentials Committee and despite objections and attempts to defer the issue, the General Assembly on Friday approved the credentials of the National Transitional Council (NTC) to represent Libya in the Assembly's 66th session.
The Assembly voted 114 in favour, 17 against and 15 abstentions. Prior to this vote, the Assembly rejected, by 22 in favour, 107 against and 12 abstentions, a motion by some African and Latino countries to reject or defer the issue to a later date.
In a related matter, KUNA learned from a Libyan diplomat that the head of the NTC Mustafa Abduljalil will represent Libya at the high-level Conference of the Friends of Liba" which will convene here on September 20 in the margins of the Assembly's high-level annual debate.
The Conference will be an occasion for AbdulJalil to meet US President Barack Obama and other Heads of State and Government who will arrive in New York for the annual debate.
The Libyan diplomat added, however, that the Libyan speech at the annual debate will be delivered by Libya's interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril on September 27.
Abderrahman Shalgham, who served the Gaddafi regime before he defected last February and became a NTC member, will remain Libya' Permanent Representative to the UN representing the new regime, the diplomat added. (end) sj.bs KUNA 162013 Sep 11NNNN
