CAIRO, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby
expressed Monday pessimism about the situation in Syria, describing it as
"complicated".
"The international community has no many options to do towards what is
happening there (in Syria)," Al-Araby said during a joint press conference
here with the Special Representative of the European Union's Southern
Mediterranean Region Bernardino Leon.
The Arab official cited the recent UN Security Council resolution which
condemned the violence in Syria.
"Had this resolution any outcome? The reply is no. The situation in Syria
is complicated."
Al-Araby said the Arab League deals with the crisis according to
developments and takes step by step.
The experience of Egypt and Tunisia shows that governments should resort to
dialogue not violence when people took to streets demanding reforms, he
underlined.
On his meeting with the Special Representative of the European Union to the
Southern Mediterranean, Al-Araby said the talks focused on mutual interest and
the undergoing democratic transition in South Mediterranean Arab countries and
EU's contributions to help prove this transition successful.
For his part, Leon described talks with Al-Araby as fruitful, highlighting
the EU's desire to enhance dialogue and economic cooperation with the region
states.
With regard to Syria, the EU official said European Union and the
international community do not stand silent about what is happening in Syria.
The European Union has expressed strong opposition on what is happening in
Syria and the need more international pressure and the possibility of imposing
more sanctions on the Syrian regime, he said. (end)
