Jordan opposition marches condemn Israel, call for reform

AMMAN, June 3 (KUNA) -- Parliamentarians and trade unions across Jordan carried out several demonstrations on Friday condemning the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, while calling for political and economic reforms in their country.
Opposition parties marched in central Amman after Friday prayers, chanting slogans in support of the Palestinian people on the occasion of the passing of 44 years since Israel's further occupation of Palestinian and Arab lands in June, 1967.
They called on the international community to bear responsibility in ending the occupation and to allow the Palestinians an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
Another demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Amman called for the embassy to be closed and its ambassador extradited, as well as the annulment of the Jordanian-Israeli peace initiative signed in 1994.
Other demonstrations in cities across the country called for tackling corruption and hastening reform, in addition to laws that organize political affairs - particularly those related to parties and parliamentary elections. (end) ab.sd KUNA 031823 Jun 11NNNN
