WASHINGTON, May 17 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unveiled late on Monday the international strategy for cyberspace to promote an open and secure information and communications infrastructure.
"The United States will work internationally to promote an open, interoperable, secure, and reliable information and communications infrastructure that supports international trade and commerce, strengthens international security, and fosters free expression and innovation", said Clinton in remarks during the release of strategy at the State Department.
"To achieve that goal, we will build and sustain an environment in which norms of responsible behavior guides states actions, sustains partnerships, and support the rule of law in cyberspace", she added.
Clinton noted that governments, the private sector and civil society groups share the commitment "to ensuring that the internet remains open, secure, and free, not only for the two billion people who are now online, but for the billions more who will be online in the years ahead".
"What they are able to do in cyberspace, whether they can exchange ideas and opinions openly, freely explore the subjects of their choosing, stay safe from cyber criminals, and engage in professional and personal activities online, confident that doing so will remain private and secure, depends a great deal on the policies that we will adopt together", she added.
The US International Strategy for Cyberspace, unveiled by the State Department, seeks to develop, deploy, and coordinate policies that address the full array of cyber issues.
"We seek to maximize the internet's tremendous capacity to accelerate human progress, while sharpening our response and our tools to deal with the threats and the problems and the disputes that are part of cyberspace", said Clinton.
She also announced the creation of the new Office of the Coordinator for Cyber Issues and that Chris Painter, a long time expert in the field, will coordinate these efforts with the private sector and other countries around the world. (end) jm.asa KUNA 170916 May 11NNNN
