CAIRO, April 9 (KUNA) -- The Arab League on Saturday urged the Iraqi
government to handle in a humane manner the residents of Camp Ashraf, who are
Iranian Mujahid-e-Khalq refugees housed in the camp since the Iran-Iraq war.
The Arab League had held lengthy talks with Iraqi officials, requesting
them not to resort to the military option on handling the matter, Deputy
Secretary-General, Ahmad bin Helli said in a statement.
Mujahid-e-Khalq (MEK) had accused the Iraqi army of committing an
"unprecedented crime", by killing 31 and injuring 300 of its followers during
clashes that occurred on Friday within the walls of Camp Ashraf, located
northeast of the capital, Baghdad.
Several countries and international organisations expressed concern
following the news, while Iraqi authorities, after confirming the casualties,
said they were applying law and order.
Camp Ashraf houses around 3,500 people, protected under the Geneva
Convention. (end)
