MADRID, March 11 (KUNA) -- The Spanish government asserted Friday its
readiness to offer urgent relief to Japan in the aftermath of the devastating
earthquake that hit northeastern parts of the country earlier today.
The powerful jolt that rocked Japan today caused the eruption of dozens of
blazes, and stirred up Tsunami waves that inflicted casualties and heavy
material damage.
Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez expressed -- in a statement made
in the name of the Spaniards -- her condolences and deepest sympathies with
the people and government of Japan, as well as families and friends of the
victims, noting that her country is ready to offer humanitarian relief to take
the edge off the suffering that came on the back of this tragedy that
afflicted hundreds of Japanese people.
Further, Jimenez made clear that her ministry is in constant contact with
the Spanish embassy in the Japanese capital of Tokyo in order to be always
updated on the conditions of the Spanish nationals there, noting that there
are no reports on any injury amidst them.
A powerful jolt, measuring 8.8 on the richter scale, erupted 20 km away
from the northeastern coasts of Japan in what caused Tsunami waves that
reached up to 10 metres high, and killed 400 people at least, while there are
more than 500 other still missing, accroding to new reports. (end)
