GAZA, Jan 3 (KUNA) -- The Asia to Gaza solidarity convoy, "Asia 1",
activists entered Gaza Strip early Monday morning through the Rafah Crossing
with Egypt, and the aid supplies are due to cross later in the day.
The convoy consists of eight trucks and four ambulances, accompanied by 108
Human Rights activists overseeing the delivery of some 1,000 ton of medical
supplies, medicines, clothing items, baby milk, and items intended for people
with special needs and those injured in battle and conflict.
The activists were greeted upon arrival by head of the government committee
for breaking the siege on Gaza Dr. Ahmad Yousef and a host of officials,
public figures, and members of the public. A press conference hailed the
efforts of the volunteers and expressed thanks to the world leaders and
peoples who helped the convoy reach Gaza.
Head of the Asia to Gaza convoy Fayrouz Mesbrola of India meanwhile said
this caravan is the biggest in solidarity with Gaza and the activists are of
different religions and affiliations, sharing belief in the Gazan cause. He
noted the activists sensed all love and appreciation as they crossed many
countries to reach their ultimate destination.
Mesbrola condemned the Israelis' attempt to stop the caravan as it sailed
from Syria to Egypt, noting "It is understandable that Israeli would feel
intimidated as Islamic, Arab, and Asian states join hands and face the siege
on Gaza as one."
The official said a number of activists were not given entry permits by the
Egyptians, adding that 8 more people are expected to accompany the aid
supplies on entry coming from Malaysia and Indonesia.
The main message of the caravan, he said, is to stress there is no room for
peace without justice and amid continued blockade on Palestinians.
The ship carrying the aid supplies had arrived Egyptian Arish Port yesterday
evening, and Israeli military boats intercepted it and inspected the goods, as
well as checked the identities of activists on board. Scores of activists also
arrived Al-Arish airport from Syria.
The Egyptian authorities had prevented Iranian activists with the convoy
from entering Egypt. The convoy had travelled 7,000 kilometers, but was stuck
in Latikia, Syria, for over a week awaiting Egypt's permission.
Starting from the Indian capital, New Delhi, the convoy passed through
Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, and Syria to reach Egypt, and finally Gaza.
Tel Aviv has been enforcing a land, aerial, and naval blockade on Gaza
Strip since mid-June 2007.(end)
