Arab League shocked by US opposition to possible UNSC recognition of Palestine

CAIRO, Dec 17 (KUNA) -- The Arab League criticized Friday the decision of the US House of Representatives to abort any Arab attempt for a UN Security Council recognition of the Palestinian State.
"This unfair decision blocked the way to international legitimacy after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu undermined all prospects of peace," the League's Assistant Secretary General for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Affairs Mohammad Sobeih told reporters here.
"The move put the entire Middle East peace process in jeopardy and could harm the US interests in the region," Sobeih cautioned.
"It's a flagrant infringement on right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the relevant UN resolutions and international laws," he said, noting that the decision cast doubts on the credibility of the US Congress regarding basis issues such as democracy and human rights.
The international community has to do justice to Palestinian people who suffered from the systematic atrocities being committed by the Israeli occupation authorities over the last 62 years, he added.
Sobeih urged the diplomatic missions of all Arab and Muslim nations in the United States as well as the Arab and Muslim parliaments to stand firm against the US stance and against any Congress decision that might further complicate the peace process. (end) mfm.ez.gb KUNA 172139 Dec 10NNNN
