BAGHDAD, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- The house of former speaker of the Iraqi Council
of Representatives (parliament) Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani came under a mortar
attack Monday evening.
Seven persons, including Dr. Al-Mashhadani's bodyguard and six other
security men were injured in the attack, said Ala' Al-Ka'bi, director of
Al-Mashhadani's press office, in a statement to KUNA.
A mortar shell landed on the house located in the heavily-guarded
International Zone (formerly known as the Green Zone) in Central Baghdad, at 9:
00 pm, severely damaging the house and destroying a nearby car, he said.
Al-Ka'bi described the condition of Al-Mashhadani's bodyguard as critical,
affirming that Al-Mashhadani and his family were safe.
The Green Zone, the seat of government, houses the main palaces of deposed
president Saddam Hussein, the headquarters of the US forces in Iraq and the
offices of major foreign companies operating in the country. (end)
