CAIRO, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- A delegation of the Arab League heads to Vienna,
Austria, Sunday to participate in the five-day International Atomic Energy
Agency's (IAEA) five-day general conference, due to start on Monday.
Delegation head, Ambassador Wael Al-Assad told reporters Saturday the Arab
group would table two draft resolutions about the Israeli nuclear capabilities
and the implementation of the IAEA's safeguards in the Middle East.
He said attempts by exclude Israel from the nuclear non-proliferation in
the Middle East was "unacceptable," calling on the Jewish state anew to join
the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Al-Assad said there was an atmosphere of pessimism because the US and the
Western group were protecting Israel from international pressure to join the
NPT.
"However, that will not stop us from continuing our efforts through all
organizations regarding the Israeli nuclear capabilities and the need that
Israel join the treaty and place its nuclear facilities to the comprehensive
safeguards," he said.
The Arab League has coordinated with the geographical and political groups
in Vienna, but there are fears from some small countries that might yeild to
pressure and change their positions, he said. (end)
