VIENNA, Sept 6 (KUNA) -- Member states of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) have received copies of a draft Arab resolution about Israel's
nuclear potentials due to be submitted to the annual convention of the IAEA
due on September 20.
Diplomatic sources told KUNA on Monday that despite opposition by western
powers namely the US against bids to raise the issue of the Israeli nuclear
arsenal, the Arab states have pressed ahead with rallying international
support to debate this issue at the annual conference.
The Arab states' insistence that Israel must join the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty and allow international teams inspect its nuclear
sites is based on a resolution that had been taken at the general conference
of the agency, taken last year, and the fact that the Jewish state has
remained sole party in the Middle East that opposes the NPT, the sources said.
Israel has linked discussing its nuclear arsenal to the peace prospects in
the region.
Director General Yukiya Amano, last Friday, distributed reports to the
member states, affirming that the international agency could not monitor and
assess the whole Israeli arsenal of nuclear potentials. (end)
