Clashes in Sudanese troubled Darfur result in 151 killed, injured

KHARTOUM, June 22 (KUNA) -- As many as 150 people were killed and injured during clashes between Sudanese government forces and rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Azban area of the troubled Darfur region, Sudan's army said on Tuesday.
Spokesman of the Sudanese army Khalid Saad that 43 JEM rebels were killed and 90 injured, adding that seven soldiers from the military were killed and 11 were wounded.
The spokesman noted that clashes erupted in Azban area when chaos and instability increased, which in turn resulted in the huge number of fatalities and injuries.
Sudanese forces were able to destroy 28 JEM armed vehicles and confiscate five others, in addition to capturing three heavy artillery guns, the spokesman added.
The Sudanese official noted that the military has now gained full control of the area after complete withdrawal of JEM rebels.
Meanwhile, JEM has a similar statement signed by its military Commander Ali Alwafi Bashar which noted on a big victory after the clashes which resulted in the destruction of two armored units and confiscation of many weapons and artillery guns from the Sudanese army.
The statement also notified that JEM will now target Sudanese military sites regardless of their location, warning civilians to stay away from such sites. (end) hhe.mb KUNA 222211 Jun 10NNNN
