ISLAMABAD, June 19 (KUNA) -- A policeman and a militant were killed and
three others were wounded in a militants daring attempt to free their
accomplices from police custody on Saturday in the southern port city of
Karachi, said police.
While four militants of banned Jundullah (Allahs Army) outfit were being
brought to the court for hearing in their case in a Karachi city court under
heavy security, three militants attacked police inside the court limits, said
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Ghulam Nabi Memon, while talking to news
reporters.
First, he said, the militants hurled hand-grenades and then exchanged fire
with policemen, killing one constable and wounding three others.
The DIG said that the three militants succeeded in freeing their four
accomplices and as they came out of the court, another encounter with police
took place. One militant was killed in police fire, added the DIG.
Security was put on high alert across the city and the DIG said that the
police was conducting search operation to arrest the fleeing militants. (end)
