ALGIERS, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- Algeria announced Thursday that it agreed to ban
the death penalty after signing to the 2008's UN Resolution 62/149, regarding
the cancellation of death penalty.
The human rights committee of the Algerian Presidential Council said that
the government was eager to bolster human rights in the country via the
implementation of the decision.
The last execution in Algeria was carried out against the terrorist group
responsible for the bombing in Algiers international airport in 1992.
Algeria will be represented in the forth international forum on the
cancellation of the death verdict in Geneva by head government consultation
human rights committee Farouk Qustantini.
The decision had been controversial with some Islamic groups condemning the
step. (end)
