KABUL, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- Unidentified motorcyclists shot dead a senior
provincial official in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Abdul Majeed Babay, director of the information department in the southern
province of Kandahar, was gunned down by two motorcyclists as he was on way
from his house to office in the morning.
Kandahar province is located in the same troubled southern zone where the
Afghan and NATO forces are conducting a massive operation against Taliban in
Marja district of Helmand province.
Police officials in the city of Kandahar said the attackers managed to
escape the scene soon after the attack. He said police were investigating the
killing but no one has so far been arrested.
It is not care as why the official was targeted and who was responsible for
the attack. However, the city is known for targeted killings of officials by
the anti-government Taliban who are waging a guerilla war against the Afghan
government and its foreign supporters over the past eight years. (end)
