EU grants financial aid for Irish workers prior to referendum on Lisbon

treaty BRUSSELS, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso who is visiting Ireland Saturday announced here the grant of 14.8 million euro to help 2,400 redundant workers in the Dell computer plant in Ireland to find new jobs.
The approval for Ireland is one of the first to benefit from the new European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to cope with the economic crisis.
Analysts here point out that the financial help to Irish workers is aimed at influencing Irish voters to vote in favour the Lisbon Treaty.
The Lisbon Treaty was rejected by Irish voters in 2008. However, Ireland will hold a second referendum on October 2nd.
Barroso is visiting Ireland today to discuss the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. He was quoted by media reports saying that a No vote will create uncertainty about Ireland's place in Europe, threaten jobs and investment, and damage the economy.
The Lisbon treaty which is aimed at a smooth functioning of an enlarged EU cannot enter into force if any of the 27 member states reject it. (end) nk.gta KUNA 191651 Sep 09NNNN
