KUWAIT, July 6 (KUNA) -- Visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker Iyad Al-Samarraie said here Monday Iraq would work with Kuwait to exit from the UN Chapter Seven within international legitimacy.
Speaking to reporters following a meeting with his Kuwaiti counterpart Jassem Al-Kharafi, Al-Samarraie said the Kuwaiti position on pending issues was clear.
"We are working, and Kuwait is so doing, within international legitimacy and in the context of international resolutions with a view to settling many outstanding issues so that Iraq could eventually exit from the Chapter Seven, under which several resolutions were imposed on Iraq," he said.
However, he recognized that Kuwait was really seeking to help Iraq, but there were some issues which are bearing on the UN, rather than Kuwait.
Some UN resolutions have been put in place, but others still need time for implementation, he said, believing that "Iraqi and Kuwaiti compliance would be a key factor in tackling such issues".
Earlier in the day, the Iraqi parliament speaker met His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
Hailing Kuwaiti hospitality, he quoted HH the Amir as wishing that Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations could be further developed in all fields.
On his meeting with the Kuwaiti parliament speaker, Al-Samarraie said they had discussed how to reinforce and deepen bilateral parliamentary ties, stressing the importance of creating a joint friendship committee.
He wished that mutual visits would be increased between both sides; having invited his Kuwaiti counterpart to visit Iraq.
He added that Al-Kharafi had invited some Iraqi members of parliament to visit Kuwait to continue two-way talks. (end) ms.na.mt KUNA 061740 Jul 09NNNN
