Iraqi activist praises brotherly ties between peoples of Iraq and Kuwait

GENEVA, March 12 (KUNA) -- Talking on behalf of a London based non-governmental-organization (NGO) Women's Solidarity for an Independent and Unified Iraq, Malak Hamdan said Thursday that the Iraqi and the Kuwaiti people have strong brotherly ties.
On the sidelines of the Human Rights Council convening in Geneva Hamdan called upon the Kuwaiti people to come to the help of the Iraqi people.
In a panel discussion on "the Security Council and Human Rights" sponsored by the Union of Arab Jurists and more than other 10 NGOs, Hamdan said that the cancer patient figures in Iraq for 2007 show that there are more than 140,000 cases of cancer, 8,000 new every year.
According to a study by Dr. Jawad Al Ali of Basra Teaching Hospital, she said that in some parts of Iraq cancer cases have gone up by 242 percent since 1990.
"56 percent of cancer patients are children under the age of 5 and that 70 percent of cancer cases could be treated but they are not because of lack of equipment and medical supplies," she said.
She confirmed that 304 journalists were killed in Iraq since March 2003 and that the perpetrators were not brought to justice up to date.
The eminent Arab jurist, expert and professor of International Law Dr. George Abi-Saab told the same panel that the absence of a body to bring accountability to the Security-Council was a major problem for Human Rights.
He added that in order to bring Israel accountable on its Gaza, Lebanon invasions and other acts must search for alternative fora.
Abi-Saab noted that the famous ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that says that the construction of the wall being built by Israel, the occupying Power, in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem, and its associated regime, are contrary to international law; was overshadowed by a second wall created by the Western countries and Western media.
