ISTANBUL, Sept 6 (KUNA) -- A Turkish soldier was killed in clashes with
rebels of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Anatolia, Turkish
security sources said on Saturday.
Hurriyet newspaper, in its online edition, quoted the sources as saying
that clashes broke out between the PKK and the army in the southeastern
province of Siirt, after the rebels opened fire at a passing patrol vehicle.
Ankara had launched a week-long land assault in February into northern Iraq
against PKK elements who were using the territories to launch attacks at
Turkey.
Since the PKK began its armed campaign for independence in 1984, some 40,
000 people have been killed. (end)
