District chief kidnapped, six killed in Afghan violence

KABUL, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- Three Taliban militants and the same number of civilians were killed in two blasts in different parts of Afghanistan, while a district chief was kidnapped by armed men in the country's eastern zone, officials said on Saturday.
Three Afghan civilians were killed in a suicide attack in Zaranj, capital of Afghanistan's western Nimroz province, on Friday night, police said today.
A bomber wearing an explosive belt detonated the bombs as he was pursued by police. The blast killed three civilians, said a police official Ahmad Khan.
The dead included two children and a man. Five more civilians, including two women, suffered injuries in the explosion, said the official.
In the southeastern province of Paktika, three Taliban militants were killed in a bomb blast, the Interior Ministry said in a statement here on Saturday.
"The three men were planting the bomb when it went off. The enemies of the country were trying to target the NATO and Afghan troops by planting the bomb on the main road," said the statement.
In yet another incident, armed men kidnapped a district chief in the mountainous Kunar province of Afghanistan.
Ghayas Haqmal, chief of Marawara district of Kunar, was kidnapped by Taliban Friday night, provincial police chief Abdul Jalal Jalal told journalists on Saturday.
Taliban spokesman Zabeehullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the district chief, but did not give more information. (end) gk.ema KUNA 021317 Aug 08NNNN
